Remove a Faucet From a Copper Water Line

Utility faucets that you find in basements, laundry rooms and gardens throughout the Bay Area are inexpensive and readily available. Although they're easy to repair, it's often even easier to simply replace one that has developed a leak or become corroded by hard well water or salty ocean air. These types of faucets can be screwed onto the copper supply pipe after first soldering on a threaded adapter, but more often, they are soldered directly to the pipe. In either case, removing a faucet is well within the purview of any home handy person.

1. Turn off the water to the faucet by turning off the shut-off valve for the water line; if you can't find one, turn off the main water supply for the house.

2. Open the faucet and let the water drain. Keep the faucet open while you remove it.

3. Remove the screws holding the faucet from any surface to which it is attached, such as the side of the house or a wall, with a screwdriver. Pull it as far away from the wall as you can.

4. Unscrew the faucet from a threaded adapter with a pipe wrench. Tighten the wrench around the base of the faucet and, gripping the pipe firmly with a pair of adjustable pliers, turn the faucet counterclockwise. If the threads have become corroded and the faucet won't turn, spray lubricant around the joint and try again in five minutes.

5. Use a propane torch to remove the faucet if it's soldered to the pipe. Protect the surface to which it was attached with a heat shield, such as a 6-inch by 6-inch piece of sheet metal, before heating the connection.

6. Light the torch and adjust the flame until it's about the width of a pencil and 6 inches long. Hold the tip about two inches from the joint while you simultaneously hold the faucet with a pair of pliers.

7. Maintain a slight outward force with the pliers. At the point when the temperature of the joint becomes high enough to melt the solder, the faucet will slip right off the pipe. Drop the faucet into a bucket of water to cool it.
